    Cyber Essentials Readiness Checklist

    Are You Protected Against Common Cyber Threats?

    Use this checklist to assess your organisation's readiness for Cyber Essentials certification. Answer YES or NO for each question to identify areas that need attention before certification.

    1. Scope Definition

    Can you clearly define the boundary of your organisation's IT infrastructure?
    Can you identify all in-scope assets (user devices, servers, firewalls, software, and accounts)?
    Does your certification scope cover your whole organisation?

    2. Firewalls and Internet Gateways

    Protect your network boundaries from unauthorised access.

    Are firewalls installed and enabled on all internet-connected devices?
    Have you changed default admin passwords on firewalls and gateways to strong, unique ones?
    Is multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled for firewall admin access?

    3. Secure Configuration

    Remove or disable unnecessary features to reduce attack surfaces.

    Have you removed or disabled default accounts and unused software on all devices?
    Have all default passwords been changed to strong, complex ones?
    Are auto-run features (e.g., for USB drives) disabled?

    4. Device Security

    Are devices configured to lock after a period of inactivity?

    5. User Access Control

    Limit access to only what's needed for roles.

    Does each person have a unique user account (no shared logins)?
    Is the principle of least privilege implemented (standard users don't have admin rights)?
    Is MFA enabled for all accounts, especially email, cloud services, and remote access?
    Do you regularly review and revoke access for leavers or role changes?
    Do you monitor for unusual login activity with alerts set up?

    6. Malware Protection

    Prevent and detect malicious software.

    Is anti-malware software installed on all devices and kept updated?
    Are downloads and executions from untrusted sources restricted?

    7. Security Update Management (Patch Management)

    Keep software and devices up to date to fix known vulnerabilities.

    Are automatic updates enabled for operating systems, applications, and firmware?
    Are critical security patches applied within 14 days of release?
    Has unsupported software (e.g., end-of-life OS like Windows 7) been removed?
